É credibile o possibile un futuro in cui tutti i quotidiani saranno distribuiti gratuitamente e dunque finanziati esclusivamente dalla vendita di spazi? Se lo chiede l’ l’ e-media institute, secondo cui negli Usa, negli ultimi 25 anni, il peso del pagamento degli utenti sul totale risorse del settore è andato progressivamente decrescendo, passando dal 27% (1980) al 18% (2005). Sotto la soglia del 15% -aggiunge il centro di ricerche -, le risorse generate dal pagamento diretto degli utenti diventano facilmente sostituibili.

In Italia, invece, i ricavi da vendita delle copie hanno ancora un peso notevole ed incidono per il 54% circa del totale dei ricavi. In Gran Bretagna la spesa dei lettori pesa solo il 35% del totale.
